The London Adventist Chorale was formed by John Tolman in 1982, with the twin aims of developing choral excellence within the church environment, and making its music known to a wider public.
In 1987 Derek Hoyte took over as Musical Director of the Chorale, and he led the Chorale (along with Ken Burton) to the runners–up position in the 1990 Sainsbury Choir of the Year competition. After assisting Derek for a time, Ken Burton took over as Musical Director in 1994, and led the Chorale to victory in the 1994 Sainsbury Choir of the Year competition against more than 300 other choirs.
The 30 singers of the Chorale belong to the Seventh–day Adventist churches in the London area. Their repertoire includes negro spirituals, a cappella and contemporary gospel as well as traditional motets and part-songs.
The Chorale has had the privilege of performing at a number of prestigious venues, both in the UK and abroad, including the 1993 Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, the Royal Festival Hall, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, St. John’s, Smith Square, Central Hall, Westminster, Westminster Abbey, Carlisle and Southwark Cathedrals, Birmingham Town Hall, Greyfriars Cathedral Edinburgh, Hexagon Theatre Reading, Buxton Opera House, the Snape Maltings as well as the Royal Gala for VE Day in the presence of HRH Prince Charles at the London Coliseum, and the De–Kalb International Choral Festival in Atlanta, Georgia. They have also toured France, Holland, Spain, and Zimbabwe.
The Chorale are regular performers on BBC Radio, and have broadcast on Radio 2’s Good Morning Sunday and Gloria Gaynor’s Gospel Show, as well as Radio 4’s The Daily Service and Morning Service.
The Chorale sincerely hopes that you enjoy Deep River, and that you are brought closer to the Lord Jesus Christ by the words and sentiments of these songs.
